“Whirlwind Ride”
Written By Dave Grill and Kellie Poulsen-Grill.
Performed by Buddy Jewell
Back before Teresa got diagnosed with breast cancer, Dave had begun writing songs as a hobby. He had called my twin sister Kaysie and me in Nashville asking us to critique some of his songs. This bullriding song was one he faxed to us. It had potential. We didn’t do anything with it and neither did Dave because Teresa got sick and then eventually passed away. After Dave and I started dating, I asked him to “pull out that bullriding song you faxed us”. He did, and we worked on it immediately. We set up a time to have it “put down” in the studio. Buddy Jewell had agreed to sing it for us. We got it done, and the demo turned out great!! We were so excited about the song and knew that it was a hit!! Back in Portland, our son Johnny had pulled up research on Lane Frost, the famous bullrider who had died bullriding, as he had to do an oral report on a famous person. Johnny chose to do it on Lane. Dave had helped him with his report and had noticed that there was a bullriding documentary movie that had been made. It was in its editing finishing process and was titled “Cowboy Up: Inside the Extreme World of Bullriding” by David Whittkower. Dave called David and told him about our song “Whirlwind Ride”, just out of the Nashville Recording Studio. Dave played David some of it over the cell phone in his truck. Whittkower loved it and put it in the movie!!! It was thrilling!!! We love this song and we especially love the fact that it is in a MOVIE!!!!!
